Heart Operation for Teenager
Rangadara Puvithra is a sixteen year old school girl from Mullaittivu, north-eastern Sri Lanka. Found to have a congenital heart defect that
required immediate attention, AuSLMAT cardiologists Dr. Jennifer Johns and Dr. Quintus De Zylva, visiting Karapitiya Hospital in June 2011, provided
vital medical equipment for the necessary operation.
Puvithra was discharged and though she needs regular cardiology reviews, she remains well.
AuSLMAT are thrilled to have been involved in the restoration of normal cardiac function without the need for open heart surgery in a young girl who
has no scars on her chest.
Paediatrician Dr. Sian Hughes will lead a team to the north of Sri Lanka in January 2012 when we hope to have Puvithra seen by her. Puvithra is now back
at school and will come down to the Batticaloa hospital when AuSLMAT visit Sri Lanka in June 2012.

Kids given pedal power
In mid-2011, an AuSLMAT team visited the villages of Beralihela and Golbokka-Weligama, both on the south coast of Sri Lanka, to conduct much-needed medical clinics. These clinics attract huge numbers of patients who are all given their medications free of charge.
AuSLMAT also takes clothes and bicycles, provided by compassionate donors in Australia, to children in these underprivileged areas. These are regularly a
source of great joy to children who have very little. AuSLMAT would like to thank these donors for their generosity, and also thank those who help to
repair and pack the bicycles for the journey to Sri Lanka.

Childeren from St. Gabriel's
These children from St. Gabriel's Hatton are each supported by a sponsor -the initial hard work of finding sponsors was done by Jeremy Pritchard. They
are now such a happy bunch of children - a testimony to the love and care of Sr. Esme. Some of these children are doing extended studies in Hatton - also
sponsored by kind donors. They spent a weekend with AuSLMAT in Galle in June this year and we are hoping to have them meet us in Batticaloa in June 2012
when AuSLMAT makes it's 23rd post-tsunami visit to Sri Lanka.
Dr. Rukman de Silva will visit them in December. Earl Barthelot of Batti is assiting in the arrangements for their stay in Batti and Una Jones a past pupil of St. Gabriel's will fund their travel. We have had several donations for them including an electric organ a few years ago. Quintus de Zylva

President's Message
Immediately after the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004, a group of Australian doctors flew to Sri Lanka to supply devastated communities with medical equipment and medication. This was how the Australia Sri Lanka Medical Aid Team was formed.
The crisis is long gone, but the need has not. We continue to support less privileged communities in Sri Lankan, and bolster its public health system.
We pay for our own travel and accommodation, and raise money in Australia to buy medical supplies in Sri Lanka for medical clinics and hospitals. Every dollar we raise is used to improve the lives of less fortunate people in Sri Lanka.
Our team is made up of doctors and other health practitioners, their families and friends. We have made lasting friendships in Sri Lanka and Australia, and enjoy helping others.
Welcome to our website, which explains what we do and how we work. Please feel free to contact us with any questions, feedback or thoughts on how you can help
